There are many things the PS5 does extremely well. Its Activity Card system is great for helping you to figure out what you’re doing in a game and for jumping straight to an activity with no fuss. The graphical and processing capabilities of the PS5 are excellent, and the console’s controller is one of the best we’ve ever used. In short, if you’ve got a PS5, you’re lucky; it really is a next-gen machine, and we get the feeling we haven’t even seen everything it can do yet, so we’re excited to see what the future of the PS5 holds.
Despite this excitement, questions still remain around the PS5. For example, there are features that some gamers would like to turn off; though the Activity Cards are great, some people think they spoil the story or progression of a game and would like to see them disabled. There’s currently no way to do this, unfortunately. Another question regarding the PS5 pertains to its aesthetic, and that question is this: can you change your PS5 theme? We have an answer to that question, and it probably isn’t the one you want to hear.
Can you change your PS5 theme?
In a word: no. There’s currently no way to change your theme or wallpaper on PS5, which is immensely disappointing. Given how great the PS5 is as a machine, you would think there would be a way to change up your PS5 theme, but Sony has not included this functionality with the default PS5 user interface, which means you’re stuck looking at that swirly background. It’s a nice, pretty visual, but it just doesn’t have the same feel to it as a solid PS4 theme used to have.
Can you change your PS5 wallpaper?
Again, sadly, there’s no way to do this. Your PS5 wallpaper is stuck just like your PS5 theme: it’s whatever the console wants it to be, and there’s no way to make it what you want it to be instead. You’ll just have to cope with looking at the images that show when you hover over a game in your main menu and pretend that you’ve set a custom PS5 theme. This is currently the only way to “customise” wallpaper, which is a shame. Hopefully, Sony adds a way to change your PS5 theme in future.
Why can’t you change the theme or wallpaper on PS5?
Sony hasn’t really provided an explanation as to why you can’t change your theme or wallpaper on your PS5. One potential reason is that the console espouses a dynamic system whereby images change when you hover over games, which means you’ll see a new image every time you’re looking at a game. However, we can’t imagine that the software wizards at Sony would let this be too much of an impediment for making it possible to change your PS5 theme, so we have to imagine that it’s a deliberate decision made by the designers. Until Sony offers an explanation, we’ll just have to wait.
Will Sony let you change your PS5 theme in the future?
It’s pretty much impossible to speculate regarding what PS5 updates could be coming in the future, so we just don’t know if you’ll ever be able to change your PS5 theme. If enough gamers complain, Sony might start listening to them and implement some kind of way to change your theme. However, although some people have certainly grumbled about this lack of functionality, it doesn’t seem like the PS5 public is angry en masse, so Sony probably won’t put this feature high on its list of priorities. If you don’t like the way the PS5 looks by default, unfortunately, it looks like you’re stuck with it for the foreseeable future.
Can you jailbreak PS5 to change the theme?
Right now, there’s no known way to jailbreak your PS5 or to hack it so you can use a custom operating system. If you see someone offering a method for hacking your PS5 to let you do things like change theme and play custom menu music, you should definitely not avail yourself of that service, as it’s most likely a scam. In general, we would caution against jailbreaking your consoles, because these processes can sometimes be irreversible, and the last thing you want to do is brick your PlayStation. When it comes to the PS5, however, you should definitely not try to jailbreak it, as there’s currently no community-approved method for doing so.
Can you change your theme on PS4?
Happily, it is much easier to change your theme on PS4, as the console was specifically made for custom themes and icons. Here’s how to change your PS4 theme.
- Head to the PS4’s Settings menu and select Themes. There’s a specific option for changing your theme, and it’s in the PS4’s Settings menu. Just head there and select the Themes option.
- Choose your theme. You’ll be presented with a menu of themes, so just pick the one you want. Confirm your choice, and hey presto – you’ve changed your PS4 theme!
- Select “Custom” if you want a specific image. You can also pick a custom image for your PS4 theme if you’d like, so hit “Custom” on the theme select menu if you want to do this. Choose the image you want to use, then set the parameters and confirm. You should now see your theme as your PS4 background!
