Region-locking is the bane of some gamers’ existence, especially when a highly-anticipated release is exclusive to another country (I’m talking about you, Japan). If you aren’t aware of what that means, basically, if you purchase a game from a country that your console is not set to, then you will be unable to play that game.
This is something that can also happen to your PlayStation 5. But how can you even tell if your PS5 is region-locked in the first place?
Is My PS5 Region Locked?
The PS5 is not region-locked with physical games. However, digital games, DLC, and films are locked based on their region. Every PlayStation has a country of origin, and when you actually create your profile, you are able to choose the country you want your account to be associated with.
So, in order to play a digital game, DLC, or film from a different region, you will need to create a new profile that has that region attached to it. Otherwise, the console will not recognize the game as playable.
How to Change Regions
To change regions, follow these directions after you’ve started up your PlayStation 5:
- Click on your Avatar on the top right-hand corner of the PS5 home dashboard.
- In the new menu, head to the Switch User option.
- Select Add User on the left.
- Create an Account.
- Ensure that your preferred Country or Region is set to wherever you want.
- Create your account using an email address different from the one attached to your main account.
