GTA VI Scams to Watch Out ForStaying Safe During GTA VI Pre-Hype Hysteria

GTA VI is one of the most hotly anticipated games of all time. According to Newzoo data, digital preorder sales for GTA VI generated $180 (£134.5) million within the first week alone.

But while GTA VI’s release is fuelling excitement among fans of the series, cybercriminals and scammers are exploiting the hype.

GTA VI Scams to Watch Out For

Cybercriminals know how to attract gamers clamouring to see more of GTA VI before it hits the market.

Fake Beta Access

If you see anyone promising access to GTA VI keys online, don’t take the bait. Rockstar Games has yet to announce a public beta testing phase for GTA VI, so avoid any ads promising access.

Scammers try to entice eager gamers into submitting personal details in return for PS5 and Xbox Series keys. If you try to access a beta, you could be giving criminals the information they need to steal your identity.

You may also download potentially unwanted applications (PUAs) or receive spam prompts for subscription services.

Fraudsters may also offer mods for GTA VI to help gamers customise their experience. However, the game’s PC release will come after the PS5 and Xbox launch. As such, any mod files are likely to contain malware (such as spyware or ransomware) instead.

Cracked Downloads

Scammers claim to have cracked digital copies of GTA VI ready to download. However, there are no cracked versions of the game available.

Players keen to try the game without paying the launch cost may be tempted to download a copy. Scammers are capitalising on the widespread demand and using fake cracked files to deliver malware. Programs may steal sensitive data from your computer before you discover the infection.

Avoid anyone who offers you access to a cracked version of GTA VI. Additionally, use security software and a virtual private network (VPN) to protect yourself.

A VPN will encrypt and secure your data, making it more difficult for hackers to view private information. If you’ve never used one before, ask other players to recommend the best VPN for gaming.

Social Posts Offering Exclusive Leaks

As you browse social media, you may see other users posting links to websites with “exclusive” leaks. Posts may promise information on previously unseen footage of the game and storyline details.

However, following a link to a website could lead you to phishing sites designed to capture your information. Scammers create sites virtually identical to the Rockstar Social Club, used to harvest your account credentials. Scam sites could also demand financial details as a final step between you and exclusive content.

To stay safe, only visit reputable sites that are likely to host genuine news updates on GTA VI. Beware of any suspicious social media accounts that claim to be ahead of major outlets, too. Rockstar Games has a carefully orchestrated PR strategy and relies on legitimate sites to help build hype for the release.

Giveaway Fraud

Cybercriminals and scammers run fake GTA VI giveaways to attract gamers who want a free copy.

However, the game will only be released on November 19, 2026. Trustworthy outlets may run giveaways closer to the time, but only Rockstar Games has access to GTA VI at present. Until then, any website, social media account or message offering early access or a free copy should be treated with serious scepticism. If something seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is – especially in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated game releases in history.

Game Testing Phishing Pages

One widely reported GTA VI scam features a website that informs visitors, “We need you to help us build Vice City.” The goal is to convince gamers that they can play GTA VI months before its release to identify technical issues.

GTA fans may find the prospect of helping to shape such a major title irresistible and sign up without question.

However, participants will download malware that gives scammers access to their device and data.

If you see any invites to test GTA VI for free, avoid downloading software or submitting personal details. Visit Rockstar Games’ official site and follow their social accounts for updates on any legitimate early access opportunities.

Staying Safe During GTA VI Pre-Hype Hysteria

GTA VI is set to be one of the biggest video game releases yet. But cybercriminals are using fans’ desperation to play and fear of missing out to their advantage. They understand how to attract gamers and offer tantalising content in exchange for personal or financial information.

To avoid being scammed, stay vigilant. Only trust credible sources likely to have real news, and keep your security tools updated.
