Edmund McMillen’s name isn’t brought up that often when it comes to game industry legends, but the American game designer has certainly released his fair share of genre-defining titles. Case in point: McMillen was one of the lead developers behind the hard-as-nails 2010 platformer Super Meat Boy, as well as the 2011 roguelite game The Binding of Isaac and the 2017 action-adventure title The End is Nigh.
While the latter of these three games didn’t exactly set the world on fire, there is an argument to be made that Super Meat Boy and The Binding of Isaac both revolutionized their respective genres. This is an especially impressive feat, given that the two titles launched in an era when indie games were still viewed as nothing more than low-budget arcade fare.
After going quiet for several years, McMillen released his latest project — a game called Mewgenics — in January 2026. Mewgenics had been in development for more than a decade. After originally being announced as a follow-up to Super Meat Boy in 2012, the game was reworked multiple times (and at one point cancelled) until it eventually reached its current state.
Mewgenics is a Bizarre Roguelike that Focuses on Breeding Cats

Mewgenics is kind of a hard game to describe; it’s about as weird as its eugenics-inspired name is. The game is a tactical roguelike life sim in which players breed cats and send them out on randomized, combat-filled adventures in an effort to build the “ultimate cat army.” Mewgenics does have a plot, but it’s spread out across a 200+ hour main campaign, which is filled with different types of enemies to meet and various difficult choices to make.
Though the game may not exactly be for everyone, Mewgenics has received widespread critical acclaim since its launch. In fact, it’s currently one of the highest-rated games of the year so far on sites like Metacritic and OpenCritic. Despite the praise that the game has gotten, it is currently only available on PC via Steam… at least, for now.

Just one month after its release, Edmund McMillen confirmed on social media that console ports of Mewgenics were in the works. However, at the time, McMillen said that the Nintendo Switch 2 was the platform he was most interested in bringing the game to, and he didn’t make any promises as to whether it would come to PlayStation 5.
It’s Very Likely that Mewgenics Will Come to PS5 in the Imminent Future

Fast-forward to today, however, and a PlayStation 5 release of the game seems more likely than ever before. Over the weekend, some eagle-eyed fans spotted that a listing for Mewgenics had popped up on the official Xbox website. According to TrueAchievements, the game’s listing says that it’s set to release for Xbox Series X/S on September 8.
Edmund McMillen has not officially commented on this leak, but by all accounts and purposes, it seems legitimate. When games get ported from PC to consoles, they tend to come to Xbox and PlayStation simultaneously. Unless, for whatever reason, Mewgenics releases on Xbox first before any other console, chances are it will launch on PlayStation 5 and (presumably) Nintendo Switch 2 on the same day.
Gamescom 2026 is only a few days away, so it wouldn’t be surprising to see Edmund McMillen and crew announce console ports of Mewgenics during the event. Even if that doesn’t happen, it feels like it’s only a matter of time until PlayStation 5 owners get their hands on the game.
