The PS5 DualSense controller was host to a slew of innovative features that made playing games easier. In addition to PS5, gamers can use it with their PCs as it is Steam-verified. However, with all these advancements, certain functions have left some users questioning just how it works.
This includes the L3 and R3 buttons. As has long been the case for Sony’s consoles, these buttons aren’t marked on the PS5 controller but are integrated into the analogue sticks, confusing many new to the platform.
The overall confusion has spawned a few questions, including whether it is possible to disable L3 and R3 buttons on the PS5 controller.
How to the Disable L3 and R3 Buttons on a PS5 Controller
Unfortunately, there is no native option to completely disable the L3 and R3 buttons on a PS5 controller. However, not everything is bleak. Players can remap these buttons to other functions via PS5’s accessibility settings.
Follow these steps:
- Go to the Settings Menu and select Accessibility
- Scroll down to Controllers tan and then click enable the ‘Custom Button Assignments option.
- From there, choose Customize Button Assignments.
- You can then assign the L3 and R3 functions to alternative buttons like the shoulder triggers or the D-pad, providing a more comfortable configuration.
- You can always reset the settings to default whenever you want.
That said, there is no proper way to disable or turn off the buttons. What players can do is turn off are Trigger Effect within some games such as multiplayer shooters, including Cold War, among others, which will prevent players from accidentally pressing L3 or R3 buttons instead of using them as analog sticks.
On another note, gamers who are desperate to disable the L3 and R3 buttons on the PS5 console can disassemble the controller altogether and remove the motherboard that holds the two sticks. Under the sticks, there are small plastic buttons which when removed disable the L3 and R3 buttons on PS5. However, we do not recommend this for obvious reasons, and just remapping the keys is a much safer option.
