What Graphics Card Does the PS5 Use?Is The Same Graphics Card Still Used in the PS5?

Determining which graphics card the PS5 may have is an important curiosity. It gives players a general idea of the current standards the console is at. This is particularly evident when comparing it with different PCs. The latest iteration of the PlayStation offers players an upgrade in game fidelity. By knowing the different GPUs, you can also engage with others when it comes to how the PS5 should perform with games. We are currently in an era where technology, especially in gaming, continues to advance. Therefore, it’s best to know what type of components you are dealing with. I aim to provide you with an idea of exactly which graphics card the PS5 uses, as detailed below.

What Graphics Card Does the PS5 Use?

The graphics card that runs in the PS5 console is a custom AMD RDNA 2. It is also known in the technology world as the “Oberon.” The GPU is part of the Radeon RX 6000 series that AMD created and released in 2020. It boasts an impressive upgrade from the RX 5700 KT series. Specifically, when it comes to the compute units that are contained within it, as the 5700 had 40. However, the Oberon kicks things up a notch by doubling it to 80. With this, the GPU receives an uptick in graphic fidelity for players to notice. Not just that, but it grants ray-tracing capabilities. So, in turn, this allowed the PlayStation 5 to start making use of the feature in games such as Grand Theft Auto 5.

Is The Same Graphics Card Still Used in the PS5?

Yes, and no, the RDNA 2 is still used in the PS5. However, it is an upgrade known as the Oberon Plus. This graphics card was a slightly smaller version of the original GPU. While this may sound like a downgrade, it’s the opposite. The newer version offers even more power consumption within the console. Not just that, but it also causes the PS5 to run cooler and be less heavy. These conveniences aim to make the console perform better overall. While also aiming to keep the performance and quality of the component consistent. The newest version of the Oberon was developed for new PS5s starting in 2022. So any newer players that picked up the console as of that year get to enjoy the newer GPU.

However, this isn’t meant to discourage any launch or early phase PS5 players. As I am one of them, the graphics on the launch version are still absolutely stunning. In recent times, a game like Death Stranding 2 is almost lifelike with the fidelity provided, even in performance mode. Overall, the GPU is remarkable. While the PlayStation 5 generation has fully proven itself yet, various games have for sure. Knowing the benefits of the RDNA 2 and what it brings to the PS5 can help you truly appreciate the system more. With that, be sure to go out there and enjoy the best-looking games on some nice-looking screens.
