Interestingly, the PS4 web browser enables users to navigate around websites using the DualShock 4 controller. It seems fair to say that this recently introduced feature to PlayStation enables users to use their console for more than just a gaming machine.
Having the ability to surf the web has become a necessity for the masses, whether it’s looking for the latest game reviews or news, to purchasing the latest PS4 titles. Whilst the smartphone market increases, the demand for internet facilities does, too. Take the following example; your PS4 has an annoying error, opening up the web browser and doing a quick search can quickly identify the solution – just one of the many advantages to having a built-in browser.
Thinking ahead, how might a PS5 integrate a web browser, and if it does, how might it operate? As HTML 5 steams ahead, you’d expect this to be incorporated. This technology is expected to replace Flash, allowing for a smoother and advanced experienced for all users alike. HTML5 games from Poki are a prime example of how this recent coding language is developing within the online game sector. Having a content rich searchable experience is certainly something that could feature with a 9th gen console, and something that Sony wouldn’t be willing to miss upon.
Imagine playing the vast amount of web-browser games from the comfort of your PS4. I’m not sure about you, but there are some really good games available, such as Poki Games – all just a mouse click away. Of course, they wouldn’t replace your amazing catalogue of titles, but rather they’d add to them. Browser games are often simple and addictive – this is one reason as to why a PS5 could unlock this very potential.
For those who aren’t aware, the PS4 is actually compatible with a mouse and keyboard, basically allowing consumers to turn their console into a PC, if desired. This makes browsing the internet fantastic and is an area that Sony’s next big console release is likely to enhance.
The next major milestone for the PlayStation brand could easily see exciting web-browser capabilities that actually better that of the typical computer alternative. In other words, your home console could be the device that delivers the best search results. Voice recognition and algorithms are already transforming the way in which we look for information, yet things are sure to change within the coming years.
Whilst the current PS4 web-browser isn’t perfect, we should consider it one of the best currently available for console users. Right now, we should imagine the PS4 web-browser as the foundations, enabling for much greater things to come.
