I feel that in today’s age of gaming, there really is nothing worse than your preferred way of playing constantly turning off on you. Imagine being in the middle of a Destiny or Warzone session, fingers sweating on your joysticks, and the PS5 shuts off. There is usually no warning, and the rage that comes after is unpalatable. So, how do you fix a PS5 that keeps turning off?
How to Repair a PS5 That Constantly Shuts Off
There are a few things you can try to do in order to repair a PS5 that constantly shuts off. For starters, try out these fixes:
- Check your power cables.
- Restore Settings.
- Address overheating and improve airflow.
Check the Power Cables
It might seem silly, but something as simple as readjusting your power cables might fix the issue. Check to ensure that your cables are properly plugged into their respective slots and aren’t hanging out at all. It’s very likely that your console keeps shutting off because the port is loose, forcing the cable to be moved out whenever the console is moved.
Restore Settings
I also recommend checking your console’s settings to ensure that things are okay. More specifically, follow these instructions:
- Restore licenses by going into Users and Accounts followed by Other followed by Restore Licenses.
- Head into the Settings > System > HDMI and disable HDMI Device Link. It’s possible that with this toggled on, the PS5 shuts off every time your television is turned off.
- Go to Settings > Power Saving and set the rest mode period to ‘Don’t Put Into Rest Mode.’
- Check to see if there are any impending updates that need to be done.
Address Overheating
Lastly, check to see if there is anything that can be done about the console’s overheating. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to send your console back to Sony or see an expert in order to clean it from dust and grime. However, you do need to be careful.
To address overheating, I recommend using a can of compressed air or an electronic duster to clean the vents and fans, ensuring there is no dust inside. Dust can prevent your console’s components from working properly, resulting in constant shutdowns.
Additionally, remove the console’s faceplates to help the flow of oxygen while dust is being released. I also recommend improving the console’s airflow by placing it in a well-ventilated area, away from walls, cabinets, or tight spaces. These types of spaces make it easier for dust to collect inside the console.
