Earlier in 2024, Black Myth: Wukong launched, featuring a playable anthropomorphic monkey character, an ancient Chinese setting, and many brutally challenging bosses. With the Souls-like genre being in full force for so long now, it’s unsurprising that this game would deliver in the myriad of ways everyone’s come to expect from these titles.
The graphics also make it look like a tech demo, and the developers brilliantly made use of the new features provided by Unreal Engine 5.
Speaking of which, let’s delve a little deeper into Wukong’s visuals and the graphical options available to players on PS5.
Can Black Myth: Wukong Run at 4K on PS5?
Yes, Black Myth: Wukong runs at 4K, providing a max resolution of 2160p (checkerboard) at 30 frames per second.
But with the PS5 being as powerful as it is, frame rates often get left in the dirt due to different video games prioritising different aspects of the visual experience.
It’s complicated stuff, but what it really boils down to is consoles are more like PCs than ever, so before you even start playing, you’re forced to make a decision that will impact your entire playthrough before you even press a button.
Most PS5 games will have the player choose between graphics or frame rate, and Wukong is no different.
Wukong’s PS5 Graphics Modes
Players have three distinct display options to choose from, depending on their personal preference: Quality, Performance and Balance.
You’ll get the best visual fidelity (the aforementioned 2160p/30fps) if you select Quality. However, reports suggest that this comes at the expense of a higher input latency, as well as a frame rate that fluctuates both above and below its target setting.
Don’t worry, though, because Black Myth: Wukong runs almost perfectly in Performance mode – even though that’s not true 4K. With this setting enabled, the game’s resolution is 1440p, albeit running at a much more stable target of 60 frames per second.
Meanwhile, the Balance setting looks to provide, well, a balance, between the two aforementioned settings. Truthfully, it’s a bit of an awkward compromise, targeting 45 fps but for a 60hz refresh rate – which can introduce a fair amount of stutter.
I saw a lot of people worried about Black Myth: Wukong running bad on PS5.
I can confirm that the PS5 version is very optimised.. the devkits were also at Gamescom and Hanghzou.

None of the options are perfect, but they’re pretty much what you can expect from the current consoles these days. We’d recommend pairing Performance mode with a VRR display for the optimal experience on PS5.
To be clear, this information is all strictly related to the PlayStation 5 version. Wukong may come to other consoles in the future, but there is still no confirmed date for when that will happen.
