Call of Duty has been a part of the PS4 for many years. With releases ranging from Ghosts to the most recent Black Ops 7. The franchise has always been stretched across as many platforms as possible. One of the few big franchises to continue providing experiences to players on previous-generation platforms. However, it seems things are beginning to change regarding the game’s availability. What was once a series covering many consoles looks set to change its ways. While we don’t know the name of the next Call of Duty, it seems Activision is backstepping on which consoles get to enjoy it.
Is Call of Duty Stepping Away From PS4?
Yes, it is officially confirmed by Activision that Call of Duty will not be on PS4. The details come from a post by Activision on May 5, 2026. It states that the next entry of Call of Duty is not launching on the PS4. While there is no explanation, it seems that developers are focusing on the game’s development across fewer systems. And while they haven’t said anything about the Xbox One, the game is likely omitted from it.
While we don’t know which game is next, whether Black Ops, Modern Warfare, or a new entry. The next game is going to be the first in a long time that is only for current platforms. So if you are looking to experience it, you’re going to need to grab the game on PS5, it seems. Whether or not this changes in the future is uncertain. But, Activision has reaffirmed that PS4 won’t be getting this entry right now.

What This Means for Call of Duty
Mainly, it allows developers to take full advantage of the current-gen consoles and performance. Call of Duty can look better and play smoother with better technology to use. However, this also means the player base may be smaller when it comes to crossplay. As of now, two consoles will be taken out of the lineup, and if players don’t upgrade, they won’t be on the new game. It also indicates that Activision and the Call of Duty developers are looking to move forward. And whether or not Warzone becomes current-gen only is unclear. But the series looks to keep things close-knit and have teams working on polish and quality for fewer consoles.
The PS5 heads into its sixth year, and it’s seen many Call of Duty titles. However, while the PS4 has been sharing the fun, many companies see the extra work as something to pass on. And with this titan of a series moving on, it could be a sign of the times. It just remains to be seen if other game developers will follow their lead.
