Spring 2026 is looking like one of the strongest release windows PlayStation has seen in a long time. Topping the most anticipated list are Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch’s follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima, and a number of major third-party exclusives slotted in for Q1 and Q2.
The data points for the PS5 reported in Sony’s early 2026 investor relations data show that over 70 million units of the console are in use worldwide. This is a clear sign the console has moved well past its launch surge.
In Ireland, gaming is growing just as fast. In 2025, overall spending totaled roughly €1.2 billion (according to IGDA and ISFE numbers), with console gaming accounting for the largest portion thereof.
Spring is when it all starts to heat up for PS5 players. Huge new games begin arriving, seasonal sales hit the PlayStation Store, and the PS Plus library gets refreshed. With gaming being the itch to scratch for many during this time, it’s arguably the busiest period of the year and can impact what consumers spend money on as a gift or for themselves.
How big is the price gap between physical and digital?
Irish shops are charging €69.99-€79.99 for physical PS5 games. The digital versions on PS Store usually cost that much at launch, but drop more quickly and more deeply during seasonal sales. Formerly spanning over March and April, the PS Store Spring Sale currently offers 30% to 50% off hundreds of titles, with PS Plus subscribers getting even more savings on top.
Switching completely to digital saves upwards of €100 a year for anyone who buys four to six games a year. There are no travel costs, no waiting for delivery, and the game can be played in minutes after purchase.
Why does a gift card make more sense than buying a specific disc?
The classic gifting dilemma hasn’t disappeared: the recipient might already own the game or they might not like that genre at all, or maybe they’d been planning to buy the digital version when it was on sale. A PlayStation gift card solves all three at once. The recipient adds credit directly to their PS Store wallet and chooses what to spend it on: a new release, DLC, in-game currency, or a PS Plus upgrade tier.
As for PS5 specifics, Sony’s Q3 FY2025 earnings report indicates that 76% of PlayStation game sales were reported as digital. If you give someone a physical disc in that environment, you are giving them what is already the most obsolete option for the PS5 to engage with. It is a well-intentioned decision that can come across as awkward.
Under Irish consumer law, gift cards bought online have a 14-day cooling-off period. The Consumer Rights Act 2022 also provides a minimum validity period of 5 years from the date of purchase, one of Europe’s strongest protections. The recipient is under no obligation to make a snap decision.
How are Irish gamers managing their PS Store spending?
The ISFE European Video Games 2025 report states that the European market is showing strong growth, with 54% of people aged 6-64 playing. That includes everything from purchasing new games to subscriptions and in-game purchases across various platforms. That means PS Store wallets are now being used for more and more of that money rather than traditional retail.
The simplest explanation for this change is how easy it is to control spending with gift cards. Players do not save any card details online; they simply top up their wallet with a fixed amount. Once again, a €50 gift card establishes a defined budgetary constraint, ensuring no overspending.
That’s especially useful for parents. If you give a teenager a gift card, they can game without the risk of unexpected charges. There’s no connected bank account, no automatic subscription renewals and no unexpected charges cropping up later.
Spring 2026 has a lot of PS5 owners ready to crack open their wallets. The more intelligent question is how those wallets are filled in the first place.
