On June 2nd, 2026, in a Sony State of Play, God of War: Laufey was announced with a full gameplay reveal. However, an official release date was missing during this reveal. Thankfully, industry insiders are currently expecting the game to launch “in the first half of 2027.” So, there is lots of time before this new PlayStation 5 game releases. Here is how to prepare for God of War: Laufey — the first new mainline God of War game in five years.
Obviously, since this is Norse mythology, you’re going to want to read up on some of that stuff. The best way to do that is to play the previous two God of War reboot games, but it wouldn’t hurt to get some of the real stuff since the games don’t show you all of it. To do this, refresh your memory on Laufey, the main protagonist of this game — her relationship with the Dwarves and her hidden past as the Golden Hand of the Jotnar. Familiarise yourself with her new companions, as well. Rue is a talking sword who provides lore throughout the adventure, and Frank is a cosmic cube voiced by Jack Quaid. Laufey also shows up at certain points in God of War: Ragnarok, so if you haven’t played that, you’re going to want to get on that.

In a more gameplay-centric sense, God of War: Laufey will feature a new combat system distinct from the previous two games. It’s a highly mobile type of playstyle, so you’ll want to get good at mastering quick transitions between air and ground without breaking the action. Also, unlike Kratos, Laufey can jump. Jumping allows for fast-paced combos and hit-and-run tactics, and dodging rather than throwing your sword back and forth. It seems to be a good mix of the classic God of War titles on PlayStation 2 and 3 and the reboot style, so yeah, you should probably play those as well. Doing so will be a bit harder since those games aren’t sold in stores anymore, but if you subscribe to PS Plus Premium, you can play them via cloud streaming.
Laufey, or “Faye,” which is her nickname, doesn’t fight alone, though. She is joined by Frank, the magical talking cube, who targets enemies and sets up magical crowd control. You should keep all this in mind when going into this new game. It won’t be a completely unheard-of way of controlling video games or anything, but if you’re familiar with God of War 2018 and God of War Ragnarok, it’s all still good to know. Her combat is very magical and very fluid, almost like the Devil May Cry games.
But, yeah, that’s basically it. Hopefully, those insiders are correct and God of War: Laufey does indeed release in the first half of next year. Oh, and it’s going to look so pretty, too. Can’t wait!
