While the world of FPS games is ever-changing, the Counter-Strike series has been a staple for PC players worldwide. Valorant is arguably the only game to challenge that hierarchy, though Riot Games decided that wasn’t enough. The team opted to release Valorant on consoles such as the PS5 as well, instead of limiting it to PCs.

However, the fact is that both platforms are worlds apart when it comes to FPS games. Factors such as controls, competitiveness, and ideal UIs differ between platforms. It’s because of this that Valorant’s PC version is fairly different than the PS5 version.

Different Pool

Valorant console gameplay

The biggest difference between the two game versions is that they utilize different player pools. Cross-progression indeed means that skins, agents, and account progression carry over between platforms. However, that’s the extent of how much PC and PS5 Valorant players can interact with each other.

The game does not have cross-play between PS5 and PC players. Unlike a game such as Overwatch 2, this extends to competitive and casual modes. PS5 and Xbox players can play in the same match, but that’s because there’s no competitive difference in this regard.

Controls and Aiming

A major reason for both platforms having different player pools is how the controls and aiming work. PC players naturally use a mouse and keyboard to play the game, while console players use a controller. But that isn’t the limit of the differences between the two platforms.

PS5 Valorant players also have aim assist that PC players lack. They also have a special focus mode that they can enable. This mode slows sensitivity for precise shots when your crosshair is near the enemy’s head. The game is essentially much easier on the PS5 to account for controllers not being nearly as accurate as a mouse.

Performance and Graphic Differences

Planting the spike in Valorant console

Valorant is completely customizable on PC. You can tweak the resolution, determine how many frames per second you want, and change the graphical textures according to your will. The downside to this is that there’s no guarantee that the performance will be stable. You could experience FPS drops if your PC’s specs aren’t up to par.

By contrast, the game had pre-determined optimized presets on the PS5. Not only are the FPS stable because of this, but the performance is always consistent. While you can’t make the game run buttery smooth with over 200 FPS, it’s a tradeoff that most console players don’t mind.

Adding to the graphical point, the UI is also redesigned on consoles. Valorant’s PC version is designed the way it is because it’s easy to navigate with a mouse. However, since the PS5 version uses a controller instead, ability usage and quick actions are mapped differently. Buy screens are also reworked for controller navigation.

Different Anti-cheat Systems

Valorant Vanguard

Many PC players refuse to download Valorant because of the kernel-level anticheat it utilizes. Vanguard is the cause of multiple issues, including frequent crashes and performance drops when it’s running in the background. However, it does its job extremely well, ensuring that Riot Games can detect most cheats and unofficial software.

Sony doesn’t let developers utilize kernel-level anti-cheats. Because of this, Valorant’s PS5 version has console-level security. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, since cheating on consoles is significantly harder than on PC. Because of this, the anti-spoofing system that the PS5 version of Valorant has is more than enough.
